Nalu & Ilios at Surf Abu Dhabi: Surf and Organic Design Amid Artificial Waves

Nalu & Ilios at Surf Abu Dhabi: Surf and Organic Design Amid Artificial Waves
Projects
July 7 2025

In the heart of Hudayriyat Island, two new iconic destinations are redefining the surfing experience: Ilios Beach Club and Nalu Surf Club. Nestled within the Surf Abu Dhabi project — the world’s largest and most advanced artificial wave facility, developed by Modon Properties — these venues are more than just restaurants or lounges. They are living architectural landscapes, designed to embrace the body and soul of those who have made the ocean — even an artificial one — their temple.

Designed by Elastic Architects, Ilios and Nalu flow in perfect harmony with the philosophy of surfing: connection with nature, rhythm, fluidity, and power. Two complementary souls coexisting in the same universe, offering different yet deeply intertwined sensory and visual experiences — like the tides of a single wave.

an immersive experience through fluid forms

Elastic’s design approach is immersive and choreographic: the space moves, wraps around you, dances. The architecture seems to mimic the soft curves of waves and the trajectories of surfers, turning design into performance. Entering Nalu or Ilios feels like diving into the heart of a wave: spaces unfold where curved lines, natural materials, and light create a sensory rhythm that oscillates between intensity and calm, energy and contemplation.

The formal language draws inspiration from a surfer’s movement — from warm sand to wave crest, and on to the stillness of sunset. The narrative unfolds across restaurants, lounges, and bars, creating a cinematic journey where every space has not only a function but a distinct emotional resonance.

middle eastern materiality and natural harmony

In designing Ilios and Nalu, Elastic has masterfully blended a materiality deeply rooted in the Middle Eastern context with a tactile and chromatic palette evoking the natural world of surf culture. Surfaces are alive: travertine, teak and iroko woods, fluted glass, braided rope, and textured plaster come together in a tactile and visual harmony of great refinement.

This is not mere decorative aesthetics, but a sensory architectural language that aims to build a dialogue between space and its inhabitants. Walls clad in natural fibers and carefully orchestrated lighting — both natural and artificial — create breathing environments, open to wind and light, like the salt-kissed skin of a surfer just out of the water.

a duality of sophistication and energy

Ilios and Nalu each have their own distinct personality and purpose. Ilios Beach Club embodies the more sophisticated side of the duo: sunlit elegance by day, magnetic allure by night. The ground-floor restaurant opens fluidly to the outdoors, while the upstairs lounge offers sweeping views and an ethereal atmosphere perfect for aperitivo. As the sun sets, the bar comes alive with energy, building into a sensory crescendo that transforms the space into a true nocturnal experience.

Nalu Surf Club, on the other hand, channels the spirit of the surfer: casual, dynamic, authentic. The ground-floor restaurant has an easygoing vibe, with an all-day concept perfect for those arriving sun-drenched and wave-soaked. Upstairs, the VIP lounge provides a more intimate, relaxed oasis — ideal for an afternoon break or laid-back evening with friends.

Both venues are designed to foster connection, sociability, and a sense of community — just like in the water, waiting for the perfect wave while chatting with fellow surf lovers.

conclusion: surf as a design code

With Ilios and Nalu, Elastic Architects prove that surfing is not just a sport, but a way of life — and above all, a powerful source of design inspiration. There’s no nostalgia here for the “real” ocean, but rather a contemporary, urban reinterpretation of its essence, placing the body, materiality, and light at the center of the experience.

In the heart of the desert, amid artificial waves and cutting-edge design, a new way of living space emerges: fluid, elegant, immersive. A tribute to surfing, yes — but also to the evocative power of architecture when it speaks the language of emotion.
