Steven Holl has been a faculty member at Columbia University, where he has taught since 1981. In July 2001, Time Magazine named him America’s Best Architect for creating “buildings that satisfy the spirit and the eye.” More recently, he was awarded the AIA Gold Medal in 2012 and the RIBA Jencks Award in 2010.
His many other honours include the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award for Arts (2008), appointment as an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (2003), the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award in Architecture from the Smithsonian Institution (2002), the Grande Médaille d’Or (2001), the prestigious Alvar Aalto Medal (1998), and the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, as well as the New York American Award.
